How to Fix a 2005 Sable Wiper Motor

    Removing the Windshield Wiper Motor

    • 1). Turn the ignition key forward to power up your car but don't start the engine. Turn the windshield wipers on. When the wipers reach their highest point on the window right before they start to come down, quickly turn off the ignition key.

    • 2). Draw a straight line down the length of each wiper blade to mark their place with the white grease pencil.

    • 3). Disconnect the negative battery cable. The top of the car battery has a 'plus' and a 'minus' symbol. Remove the cable from the minus battery terminal side and wrap the metal end completely with the black tape. Make sure as you lay the cable down that it doesn't make contact with any other metal.

    • 4). Remove the protective caps from both windshield wiper pivot arms. Unbolt each of the arms with the socket wrench set. Place both of the lug nuts in your pocket for safe keeping. Remove both pivot arms. You may have to wiggle them a bit to get them off, but be careful not to smear the grease pencil line.

    • 5). Pop the vent cover off by hand or use a flat-head screwdriver. Take out all four bolts holding the shaft assembly to the control arm of the wiper motor.

    • 6). Unplug the wiring harness on the wiper motor. Mark the wire with the painter's tape.

    • 7). Remove the bolt that holds the control arm from the wiper motor. Start one at a time, and take out the three remaining bolts holding the wiper motor to the firewall. Slowly remove the windshield wiper motor while making sure that no other wires are caught up. Set the old wiper motor to the side of your work area.

    Installing the Wiper Motor Replacement

    • 1). Place the new wiper motor back into the same position as the old one.

    • 2). Put the wiper motor control arm back on and bolt it in place. Reconnect the shaft assembly and its four bolts. Place the vent cover back on.

    • 3). Place each of the windshield wiper pivot arms back in place. Before bolting them down, make sure each of the arms' wiper blades is on the grease pencil line.

    • 4). Remove the painter's tape from the wiper motor wiring harness and reconnect it to the wiper motor. Unwrap the negative battery cable connection terminal and secure the cable to the car battery. Turn the power on in the car, and test out the new wiper motor.
