- Some local chain stores, such as Jo-Ann Fabrics, carry decorator fabrics and offer sales on them from time to time at 30 to 50 percent off. Respected fabric lines, such as Robert Allen and Waverly, are offered at affordable prices when on sale.
- If you're lucky, you might have a factory outlet in your town. Factory outlets sell merchandise directly to consumers, instead of selling them to another retailer who would then mark up the price. Though many factory-outlet stores are grouped together at factory outlet malls, you will typically find factory-outlet fabric stores as stand-alones. Go to http://www.outletbound.com/usa50.html to see if there is a store near you.
- Mill ends are the ends of rolls of new material that have either been damaged or are the result of surplus from the manufacturing process. Some stores specialize in buying up all the "ends" of fabrics that cannot be ordered any more because there's only one or two bolts left. Buyers can get great prices on these bolts if they don't need a lot of fabric.
- Some online stores are essentially factory outlets or mill-end dealers. Search under "discount fabrics" for some good prices on great fabrics. Just be sure your computer monitor is accurate so that you aren't surprised by the color when the fabric is delivered.
- Fabric can also be bought for a reasonable price on eBay. Type in the type of fabric you are looking for (say, wide-wale corduroy) and the color. You'll be amazed at what is available. Some fabric is from online stores, and some is from upholsterers and slipcover and drapery makers who have leftover fabric from an order.
