Descaling your espresso machine is effortless and effective when you utilize products that are customized for your particular type of machine.
It wasn't long ago that vinegar was the desired chemical for cleaning coffee and espresso machines.
More recently our coffee appliances have become more sophisticated and efficient thus requiring a descaling agent that would effectively remove the mineral build-up on the water boiler and tank while protecting the appliance from caustic odors and undesirable toxic chemicals.
It is also important to use a product that is safe and non-toxic for human consumption.
Different espresso machines require different descaling techniques and products to do the job.
You will find decalcifing agents in liquid, tablet, and powder forms.
Different Manufacturers recommend different form of descaling products but basically the goal is all the same.
You want to remove the scale using a chemical that is placed in the water reservoir so it can be taken up into the boiler and tubes that deliver the boiling hot water.
As the chemical soaks inside the machine, it cleans the build-up.
With all espresso machines, the goal is to put the correct concentration of descaler into the water reservoir and run the product through all tanks and tubes.
If you are using tablets, you must first dissolve the tablets completely before running the descal cycle.
This takes only a few minutes and is actually fun to watch.
When water mixes with the tablet you will witness an entertaining show of fuzzing, bubbles, and "water dancing", as I like to call it.
My favorite descaling tablets are Jura tablets.
Jura tablets are powerful yet safe and are recommended for Jura machines.
Dezcal, made by Urnex is an inexpensive all around good decalcifing powder.
I advise Dezcal for all commercial espresso machines.
Dezcal is also perfectly acceptable for home machines at fifty percent the concentration used for the commercial machines.
If you use liquid, it is usually concentrated and you simply mix this solution with water in the reservoir and you are ready to proceed.
Durgol brand Swiss Espresso is a wonderful, easy to use liquid product that is widely used for this purpose.
It is sold in single use bottles, two to a box.
It is safe, nontoxic, and highly effective.
Durgol states that their product is for all "high end" espresso machines.
Let's face it, all espresso machines are "high end" which translates to "big investment" which encourages regular maintenance.
Remember, you want the solution to soak in the middle of a brew cycle so it is exposed to all possible components that accumulate scale.
This repeated cycle of exposing the inner tank and tubes to the chemical is what loosens and cleanses the machine of the undesired residue.
After a ten minute soak, you continue the brew process, off and on, until you have emptied the tank of all solution.
The next step is to run the process with clear water , then brew a shot to ensure the solution has cleared.
Remember to follow the recommendation of your machine's manufacturer for the best results.
You never want to delay necessary maintenance of your espresso machine.
Clogged machines will quit working and require expensive repairs.
Maintenance is simple and cost effective so remember to keep extra maintenance supplies on hand at all times.
It's no fun to wake up to a no coffee day.
