Road salt works wonders to remove ice and snow from roadways, making them safer for motorists. But occasionally you may track road salt into your car, leaving white stains behind. Water tends to dissolve the salt but when it dries, the stains still remain. A few different methods will remove those salt stains. - Carpet shampoo will break down the salt, removing the stains from the carpet. Simply mix a dime-sized amount of carpet shampoo with two liters of water. Use a soft cloth to apply the soapy mixture to the affected area. Blot it lightly. After removing the stain, rinse the area with cold water. Blot with a dry towel to remove excess moisture and allow the carpet to dry completely.
- Water alone tends to dissolve the salt, making it look clean at first. But once the carpet dries, the salt stain becomes noticeable again. Vinegar break down the salt much better than water. Mix half water with half vinegar. Use a scrub brush to apply the mixture to the salt stain. After removing the stain, blot the area with a clean, dry towel to remove moisture. Allow the carpet to dry before entering the car.
- Mix a tablespoon of laundry detergent with 3 cups of water and apply the mixture to your carpets with a sponge or soft cloth. Rub in a circular motion until the stain disappears. Rinse with cool water and blot to remove excess moisture.
