College Theme

• Becoming a devout fan of the high school graduate's new college team is a must. Get in the spirit by using the college team's colors and mascot for the high school graduation reception.
  
  If the graduate is attending the University of Colorado-Boulder, decorate the party in black and yellow gold. The Buffs are the university's mascot, so find small buffaloes to place on tables. Personalize a cake or frosted cookies with a buffalo design. Show clips of old CU football games and shots of the Rocky Mountains on a television.
  
  

Location Theme

• For high school graduates heading to a different locale for their college, work or military career, turning the reception into that location is a great theme idea. For example, if the high school graduate is headed to a military base in Hawaii, have a luau-themed party. As guests walk into the reception, place a colorful Hawaiian lei around their neck and say "Aloha." Food could include roast pork, grilled fish and pineapple. Hula music could play in the background, and bright, vibrant flowers could serve as centerpieces.
  
  If a high school graduate is headed to a university in southern California, such as USC, UCLA or the University of San Diego, consider a Hollywood-themed reception. Roll out a red carpet in the front entry and take pictures of guests as they walk in. Fake palm trees could be set up for a California beach backdrop, with sounds of the sea playing in the background. Fresh fruits, vegetables and other organic treats could be served. Cutouts of movie stars could be hung throughout the reception area.
  
  

Traditional Theme

• Use the colors of the graduate's high school alma mater. Hang pictures of the graduate in sports uniforms over the past 10 years to show how he has grown both as a person and an athlete. For artistic students, set out art projects from their elementary and middle school years. For music students, play footage of their early piano recitals and band concerts. Designate a spot to display high school accomplishments, trophies and pictures.
  
  Food for a traditionally themed high school graduation can include a cake with the high school graduate's name and graduation date written on it, a cheese-and-cracker platter, deli sandwiches and a fruit and vegetable tray.
