- 1). Disconnect the negative cable from the battery terminal using a wrench. Label each wire on the distributor noting the location of each one. Remove the wires from the distributor cap. Remove the mounting bolts from the distributor using a socket and ratchet wrench. Pull the cap from the mounting surface.
- 2). Make a mark on the intake manifold noting the position of the rotor in relation to the distributor housing. Do not try to start the engine once you have begun disassembling the parts or the engine will no longer be in time. Remove the hold-down bolt from the distributor using a socket and ratchet wrench. Remove the distributor from the engine.
- 3). Place the new distributor on the engine. Tighten the hold-down bolt using a socket wrench. You must put the distributor on so that it lines up with the mark you made when removing the old one. Place the cap on the distributor and secure it with the retaining bolts. Connect the wires to the cap according to the labels you made.
- 4). Connect the negative cable to the battery terminal with a wrench. Start the engine to test the new distributor installation. The engine should start and run smoothly.
