How to Replace a Fiberglass Shower Stall

    • 1). Remove faucet handles and towel bars if applicable. Unscrew the faucet handles with a screwdriver and slide them off the fixture.

    • 2). Pry up the shower stall walls from the drywall. Insert a metal scraper behind the walls and gently pry them up. Pull the walls from the cement backer board carefully, and the new stall will install right over them.

    • 3). Cut the caulking along the bottom edge of the shower pan with a razor. Remove the caulking by hand, chipping away any remaining caulk with the metal razor.

    • 4). Stuff a rag into the drain of the shower. Drill out the gasket around the drain by placing the tip of the drill on the gasket and drilling into it. Move the drill bit to the side and place it right next to your hole. Drill out this section of the gasket. Continue until the entire drain gasket is removed.

    • 5). Slide the edge of a pry bar under the bottom edge of the shower pan wall. Lift up the pan by pressing down on the pry bar. Lift the pan up and out of the shower stall.

    • 6). Install the shower drain in the pan drain by placing the bottom half under the pan, and the top half on top. Screw them together with the gasket inside. Lay the new shower pan into the stall. Line it up flush against the wall and check for levelness by setting a carpenter's level on each edge. Lift the pan up and slide a wood shim under the pan to make it level if necessary.

    • 7). Place the new shower stall walls in place to ensure a proper fit. Remove them, then apply a bead of adhesive to the back of the walls. Place the walls in the shower and press them against the drywall. The bottom edge of the walls must be flush with the top edge of the shower pan.

    • 8). Run a bead of caulking around the outside bottom edge of the shower pan with a caulking gun. Apply a bead of silicone caulking to the seams of the walls, and the wall and pan seams to seal out moisture.

    • 9). Install the faucet handles by sliding them back in place and tightening the securing screws. Run a bead of silicone around the seams between the fixtures and shower walls.
