Messages for Sympathy Flowers

Flowers may be sent in lieu of attendance at a funeral or after a funeral to comfort the bereaved. When sending sympathy flowers, it is appropriate to send a message along with the flowers, conveying your regrets. While sending flowers is a simple gesture, wording the sympathy card that goes with it can be tricky.

Personal Memory

If you have the space on the sympathy card, share a memory featuring the deceased. It may be something that the recipient was a part of, or it might be something that reveals another facet of the deceased to the recipient. Keep the memory brief and upbeat. This is a good way to make the message more personal and more meaningful to the person who was so recently bereaved.

Remember that the message that you write for sympathy flowers does not need to be long. It can be as simple as "Our condolences," or "Condolences in the time of your loss." A short brief message that expresses your feelings of sorrow is evocative and straightforward, and a person who is exhausted with grief may appreciate not needing to deal with a long outpouring of sorrow or good wishes.

Though any flowers are appropriate for sympathy bouquets, some flowers have traditional meanings that may be appropriate for the occasion. The Light Beyond suggests explaining the symbolism of the flowers that you have chosen on the sympathy card. For example, roses stand for love, while protea stands for courage. Carnations symbolize pride and beauty while lilies stand for life. You also may choose flowers that meant something to the deceased and explain their significance with relation to the deceased as well.

If you want a more active message on the sympathy card, let the recipient know that she is in your thoughts. It is comforting for her to know that you are thinking of her, and it allows her to know that you are there if she needs you. This message is a good one for letting someone know you want to help without being pushy. After the death of a loved one, different people need different things, and this message allows them to ask for what they need.
