- Make sure the engine and exhaust system are cool to the touch before you begin. They reach very high temperatures during operation and could cause severe skin burns.
You must remove several components to give yourself enough room to remove the exhaust manifold. Take off the air cleaner duct assembly, electronic fuel injection (EFI) bracket tube, battery side cover and dipstick tube at the manifold.
The exhaust manifold connects to the exhaust pipe at the lower end. Since you must unplug the oxygen sensor to detach the pipe, disconnect the ground battery cable. Then raise the front of your Fiero and remove the exhaust pipe from underneath. The pipe mounting bolts might be hard to turn; it's a good idea to use a breaker bar, ratchet extension and socket.
When removing the exhaust manifold, loosen the mounting bolts a few turns at a time, using a crisscross pattern. Clean the gasket mating surfaces at the engine and manifold before reinstalling it. - The Fiero 2.8 liter engine model comes equipped with a front and rear exhaust manifold. To remove the manifolds, you must take the engine compartment lid off for better access. Scribe aligning marks at the hinges of the lid to guide you during later reinstallation. This should give you plenty of room to remove the manifolds. Unplug the brake vacuum hose and the ground battery cable for safety.
The front manifold has a heat shield mounted on top. Once you remove it, you will see the front manifold mounting bolts. Work in a crisscross pattern as you loosen the bolts gradually. Follow the same procedure for the rear exhaust manifold. Once off the engine, clean the gasket mounting surfaces on the engine and the manifolds before reinstalling them.
