- 1). Hold the penny between your thumb and forefinger with the heads side facing you. Slide the penny between the tread grooves on a tire and turn it so that the top of Lincoln's head is touching the tire.
- 2). Look closely at the penny. If you can see all of Lincoln's head, your treads are worn and your tires should be replaced soon.
- 3). If any part of Lincoln's head is obscured by the tread, there's still a safe amount of tread left on your tires.
