- If the oven door is locked but no food or utensils are in the oven and the self-clean cycle wasn't on, try starting a short clean cycle of either one or two hours. The oven heats up, removes all the caked-on dirt and food from the oven walls and floor and slowly begins to cool. After the cycle ends, wait 30 minutes and try again to open the door. Once the oven cools from the self-clean cycle, which takes roughly 30 minutes, the door should open automatically.
- If the oven door is locked and food or utensils are stuck inside, wait 30 minutes before trying again to open it. The appliance senses that the inside of the oven is still too hot to open safely. The self-cleaning cycle shouldn't be turned on if there is anything inside the oven due to the possibility of a fire. The locking mechanism should release the lock once the temperature has reached a safe level.
- If the door is stuck after a cleaning and an appropriate amount of time has passed, try moving the oven latch to the left for manual locked ovens. On some models, the door latch needs to be pushed in slightly before it will move to either the left or right. Other models have dials that need to be placed in the "Clean" position. If the oven has such dials, spin the dials a full 360 degrees and then back to the "Clean" position. This should release the automatic lock.
- If all else fails, unplug the oven, wait 30 seconds to a minute, and plug the appliance back in. This should release the lock. If the door still doesn't open, wait 30 minutes in case the oven is still too hot. A called to General Electric may be necessary if the lock doesn't open after the 30-minute wait. According to GE Appliances, you should never try to force the door or latch to open as this could damage the oven.
