Transform a plain slab of concrete in your backyard into a space you can show off, entertain guests, relax and have an additional living space. Remodeling a patio deck will not only help your home look better, but can raise the value of your home and your quality of life.

Rooftop Deck

Perfect for those who do not have a big yard or want to add to their patio, a rooftop deck will give you added privacy, a multilevel space to entertain and a chance to get away from the world. You can create a rooftop deck directly above a covered patio and install a spiral staircase that leads up to it, but will not take up a lot of room. Place weatherproof patio furniture, sun umbrellas, a fire pit and small raised flowerbeds to enhance the look of the deck. Place solar lights around the perimeter of the deck, gas lamps in the corners or a miniature street lamp to illuminate your path at night.

Create a private oasis in your yard by building your very own retreat. In one corner of the patio deck, install a small pond or wall fountain whose water rests and lands on smooth, medium-sized rocks. Off to the side of the water display, build a roofed pergola where vines can crawl up its sides. Place plants around the perimeter of the oasis to define the space and add weatherproof lounges and an outdoor table so you can relax and read a good book. If you decide to install a pond, consider adding water plants such as water lilies, lily pads and lotus flowers.

Transform a regular wooden patio deck into an outdoor living space with the help of a screened gazebo with sunburst railing. Instead of placing the gazebo in the middle of your patio, which will take up a lot of room, place it at one end of the patio, off to the side, as an addition to your patio deck. This will help provide different outdoor spaces for relaxing and socializing. Inside the gazebo, install a bench that runs along the inside perimeter of the structure and hang a weatherproof chandelier from the middle of the roof. A gazebo can also give you a space to install a spa or sauna that allows you to be outdoors and have a sense of privacy.
