- 1). Assess for fracture (see "How to Assess for Fracture").
- 2). Immobilize the injury: Any movement is not only very painful but also can worsen the injury.
- 3). Put enough socks on the foot to fit snugly into a boot or shoe.
- 4). Cut away the toe of the shoe and the socks underneath in order to monitor the toes for circulation, sensation and motion.
- 5). Put the shoe on the foot, being extremely careful to minimize movement of the injured area.
- 6). Check circulation, sensation and motion beyond the fracture sight.
