- 1). Cut a slit in the center of a coffee filter.
- 2). Place the coffee filter flat in the base of the hanging basket. If you're using a hanging basket designed for upside-down planting it will already have a hole in the base. If the you're using a regular container, drill a circular hole in the center of the base that is about 2 inches in diameter. The slit in the coffee filter should be aligned with the hole in the base.
- 3). Hold the plant by its foliage, then guide the root ball up through the coffee filter into the hanging container. The coffee filter anchors the plant until the roots establish themselves. It also prevents soil from falling out through the hole.
- 4). Steady the plant from beneath the container, then fill it with potting soil. As you fill, tamp the soil down firmly around the root ball. Continue filling to about 1 inch from the rim.
- 5). Water the plant thoroughly by pouring water in from the top of the container. Mist the leaves with water.
- 6). Hang the plant in a location that receives indirect sunlight. Rabbits foot fern prefers temperatures of 60 to 75 degrees F.
