- 1). Dial the cycle control knob to the "High Heat" setting, close the dryer door and press the "Start" button. Check the dryer drum after five minutes to determine if the cycle had previously been set to air dry, for example, which would not produce heat. Also note whether the drum is spinning inside as you open the door. If not, you may have a broken drive belt or a motor problem.
- 2). Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet and pull the dryer out from the wall.
- 3). Unscrew the clamp that holds the vent hose to the back of the dryer and pull off the hose.
- 4). Remove the screws holding the stainless steel back plate to the rear of the appliance. Pull the plate off the back of the dryer and set it aside. Place the screws in a safe place for reuse.
- 5). Plug in the power cord to the wall outlet with dry hands. Set the cycle to high heat and press "Start," keeping your hands and tools away from the interior of the dryer. The drum should begin rotating with normal operation.
- 6). Watch the heating element, which consists of three wire coils set vertically in a metal frame at the back of the appliance. The coils will quickly glow orange-red with normal operation, and the fan motor in front of the element will force hot air into the dryer drum. If the coils do not heat up, the element likely needs replacement. Coils will sometimes break somewhere along the wire; note any break and replace if necessary. If there is no sign of breakage on the element, the problem may instead be with the thermal fuse, which is located near the dryer vent.
