- 1). Elevate your vehicle. Park your car onto drive-up ramps or use a jack and jack stands, one on each corner of the car to suspend it off the ground.
- 2). Remove the fuel pump's fuse. Open the main fuse box in your car and remove the fuse labeled fuel pump. Start your car and let it run until it shuts off from an absence of fuel pressure. Remove the key from the ignition.
- 3). Locate the gas filter. On most cars the gas filter is located under the car attached to the fuel lines. It is a cylinder and is usually labeled. Alternatively on some cars it is located under the hood in a relatively accessible spot.
- 4). Remove the protective shield that covers the filter with the wrench. Turn the nuts on both sides of the filter until the shield comes off. Unscrew the gas filter mount that holds the filter to the frame of the car.
- 5). Disconnect the fuel lines. Loosen the nuts that connect the fuel lines to the filter and remove them. Remove the fuel filter. A small amount of fuel may leak out.
- 6). Install the new gas filter. Make sure that the arrow that is printed on the filter is pointed toward the engine. Attach the filter to the car by placing it in the mount and screwing the mount to the frame. Replace the protective shield and re-connect the fuel lines to the new gas filter.
- 7). Replace the fuel pump's fuse and start your car. Check the gas filter and lines for leaks once the car is running.
