Many homeowners choose to grow their own vegetables to lower food costs. Growing vegetables in a home garden is an easy and inexpensive method of providing your loved ones with healthy, fresh food. Narrow down your choice of vegetables to grow by planting the easiest and most common varieties available. Anyone can grow a garden abundant in various vegetables as long as three basic elements are provided: sun, water and good soil. - Lettuce planted in a vegetable garden will provide you with an abundant supply of crisp, fresh produce for salads or sandwiches. Lettuce plants prefer cooler temperatures, so plant early varieties, such as black-seeded Simpson green leaf lettuce, in early spring or late summer. Many different types of lettuces grown include leaf, romaine, butterhead, crisphead or stem. Each type of lettuce has a distinct flavor and varying leaf sizes.
- Carrots make great garden vegetables due to their high fiber content and rich amounts of vitamin A. Some varieties of carrots include long orange carrots, such as tendersweet, or short baby carrots, such as baby spike. Plant all varieties of carrots in the early spring. Till and loosen the soil to provide the carrots with enough room to grow, or you will end up with gnarled and twisted shapes. Carrots are delicious whether eaten raw or cooked, and store well for several weeks in the refrigerator.
- Tomatoes are one of the most popular plants to grow in the home garden, according to the University of Illinois Extension. With hundreds of varieties of tomatoes available to grow, it is no wonder that many people prefer homegrown over store-bought. Tomatoes love the warmth of summer, so plant all tomato plants in an area of the garden that receives six to eight hours of sunshine a day. Tomato varieties range in shape, color, size, type and time of maturity. Tomato plants are classified into two types: indeterminate and determinate. Indeterminate tomato plants will continue to grow and produce fruit until the first frost. Determinate tomato plants grow to a certain size and produce all of the season's tomatoes at once.
- Squash plants are classified as summer or winter squash. Summer squash grows on bush-type plants in warmer temperatures, while winter or fall squash grows on vine-type plants in cooler temperatures. Both types of squash, summer and winter, produce flower blossoms that are edible.
