- 1). Place two separate rings around the tree with marking paint. Position the rings approximately 6 inches apart and at a height that is comfortable for you.
- 2). Turn on the chain saw, hold it sideways, and cut a groove into the top ring 1/2 to 1 inch deep. Make sure you cut all the way around the tree and completely through the bark.
- 3). Place the tip of the chain saw against the second line, and make a second cut around the tree. Cut to the same depth as the first time. Again, make sure you cut completely through the bark. This will stop the flow of sap from the roots to the rest of the tree, and the thorn tree will die.
