- 1). Pick out your tiles. There are many places you can purchase ceramic tiles of all colors, shapes, sizes and designs, including home improvement stores such as Lowe's or Home Depot, art supply stores, kitchen stores and the Internet. There are even some places, such as artontiles.com, where you can order tiles specially painted with any design you choose. If you want a totally original design, you can even contact a ceramic artist in your area who can probably create whatever you want.
- 2). Lay out your design. You can do just plain tiles, alternate them in patterns or have a centerpiece tile surrounded by solid colors. There are myriad ways to arrange ceramic tiles to create a completely unique design. You want to lay out your design first and make sure that you love it.
- 3). Begin applying the tiles. To make your masterpiece the backsplash behind your range you will need to pull it out and mark where the top of the range hits the wall. Ideally your ceramic tiles will go just slightly below that to make the transition from range to backsplash look flawless. To apply the tiles, first apply tile adhesive to a small section, then apply the tiles one at a time putting spacers in between the tiles.
- 4). Grout and clean. When your adhesive has dried for about 24 hours, you can remove the spacers and apply grout to the cracks. When you've grouted in between all the tiles, let it dry for a few hours and then clean the excess grout from the tiles. Move your range back into place and enjoy your one-of-a-kind creation.
