Jésus est né en Provence - French Christmas Carol

Jésus est né en Provence is a traditional Provençal Christmas carol, and as far as I know, there is no equivalent English version. The translation given here is literal.

Jésus est né en Provence
Entre Avignon et les Saintes-Maries.
Jésus est né en Provence
C'est un berger qui me l'a dit.
Dans le Midi de la France
Sous la dentelle des tamaris,
Jésus est né en Provence,
Jésus est né dans le Midi

          Jesus was born in Provence
          Between Avignon and Saintes-Maries.

          Jesus was born in Provence
It was a shepherd who told me that.
          In the South of France
Under the lace of tamarisk (trees),
          Jesus was born in Provence,
Jesus was born in the South.

Il m'a dit le berger, il m'a dit
Qu'un olivier avec ses branches
Lui avait fait comme un tapis
Et puis et puis la brebis blanche,
Qu'il y avait auprès de Lui
Sentait le thym et la lavande
Des montagnes de mon pays.
Peut-être n'est-ce qu'une légende
On blague un peu dans le Midi …

The shepherd told me, he told me
That an olive tree with its branches
Made a sort of rug for Him,
And then and then the white ewe
          That was near Him
          Smelled thyme and lavender
From the mountains of my country.
          Maybe it's only a legend
They joke a bit in the South ...

Refrain

          Refrain

And if the shepherd lied to me, well!

          It wasn't (out of) spite.
Truth be told, in this paradise
Between the Rhône and Durance rivers,
You could believe that the little one
Could only be born in Provence
          In a stable near Saint-Rémy
          When the stars shone
In our sky at midnight ...

Refrain

          Refrain
