- Bare-rooted pecan trees are best planted from December through mid-March in Texas. Container-grown trees can be planted anytime but best done in fall or winter. This allows roots to establish nicely before the summer heat arrives.
- If the pecan tree is growing in a plastic sleeve, regard it and plant it as a bare-rooted tree, according to Texas A&M University. Once planted, bare-root and sleeved trees are cut back by 50 percent in height. Container trees also benefit from height reduction after planted, but only a 20 to 30 percent reduction is appropriate.
- Even though cooler temperatures abound fall through spring, monitor the soil around the pecan tree to keep it evenly moist. Pecan trees prosper in soils that are at least 3 feet deep and have excellent drainage.
