How to Rate Golf Courses

    • 1). Notice the location of the golf course upon your arrival. Is it convenient and easy to find? Do the owners do an adequate job at promoting the location of the golf course (such as signs and other advertisements)? If you're displeased with the location of the course, think of places that would be better suited for a golf course of this nature.

    • 2). Compare the price of the golf course to others in your area. Factor in the day on which you playe and whether anything was included, such as a golf cart. Obviously, golfing on a random Tuesday afternoon should provide a better deal than a noon tee-time on a Saturday. Also, think about whether you feel you got your money's worth. If not, this should negatively impact your overall rating of the golf course.

    • 3). Make notes about certain hazards found on the golf course. This can include sand traps, water and trees that obstruct the fairway. Try to remember on which holes these hazards can be found. Also, notice whether they actually make a difference on the golf course of if they're just there. Many times, a golf course will place a sand trap randomly on a course just so the course appears more difficult.

    • 4). Evaluate the overall difficulty of the course after you've finished your round. If you go golfing with a group of people, ask them about their feelings regarding the difficulty of the course. Perhaps you had an off day and your partners didn't feel that the golf course was horribly difficult. At the same time, you may have had a particularly great day while your friends found the course to be very challenging. Consider these facts when rating the difficulty of any golf course.

    • 5). Use the Lower Score Golf website to make your ratings available to others. Click on “Rate your favorite” found on the left side of the home page.

    • 6). Use a 1 to 5 scale (yes, decimal ratings such as 4.3 are allowed) to rate a particular golf course on visual appeal, challenge level, course conditioning and service .

    • 7). Add up the total number from the four different areas. At the bottom of the page, fill out the required information (name of the golf course, location of the course and the total rating you've given the course). Submit the form when you've completed your rating.

    • 8). Send any comments about the course to courses@lowerscoregolf.com. Add more comments if the rating system doesn't give you the opportunity to say everything you want to about a particular course.

    • 9). Look for yours and other golf course ratings on the “Public Golf Courses” found on the left side of the “Golf Course Ratings” page.
