- 1). Raise the truck with the floor jack and place it onto the jack stands, positioning each stand onto opposing sections of the frame.
- 2). Remove the wheels and tires by turning their lug nuts counterclockwise, and set the wheels aside.
- 3). Place the floor jack underneath the leaf spring U-joint where it meets the axle, but do not put any pressure on it. The springs must stay relaxed.
- 4). Unbolt the U-joint bolts by turning their nuts in a counterclockwise direction with the socket wrench. Do not remove the U-joint bolts. Stow the loose nuts in a safe location.
- 5). Remove the leaf spring from the rear shackle by turning the bottom nut counterclockwise with a socket wrench, holding the bolt with a wrench or clamp. The bolt should slide out once freed, or can be lightly tapped out with a screwdriver and hammer. It is not necessary to remove the top nut unless the shackles are going to be replaced.
- 6). Remove the leaf spring from the front mount by turning the nut in a counterclockwise direction, holding the bolt with a wrench or clamp. The bolt will slide out. The entire weight of the leaf spring is now resting on the floor jack at the U-joint. Taking the U-joints out by lifting them off of the axle will release the leaf spring, and it can be manipulated out with the floor jack.
- 7). Position the new leaf spring into place with the floor jack, and secure the U-joint bolts over the axle but do not attach the nuts.
- 8). Secure the front mount bolt first by sliding it into the spring's bushing, then turning the nut clockwise. It should not be tightened all the way.
- 9). Reattach the rear shackle to the leaf spring by putting the bolt into the bushing while it is in position, then tightening the nut. The nut should be firmly tightened, but not so much that the shackle is distorted.
- 10
Firmly tighten the front mount nut and bolt, and secure the U-joint bolts with their nuts, turning all in a clockwise direction. All nuts and bolts should now be reattached and tight. - 11
Replace the wheels and secure them with the lug nuts, then lower the truck from the jack stands.
