How to Create Art With Microsoft Paint

    • 1). Open Microsoft Paint. The Paint program is found in the "Accessories" folder of the "Start" menu.

    • 2). Resize the canvas, which appears as white space in the Paint screen. Click on the tiny blue square on the right side of the canvas and pull to the right or to the left to narrow or widen the canvas horizontally; click on the corresponding blue square on the bottom of the canvas and pull upward or downward to shorten or lengthen the canvas vertically. To adjust both width and height simultaneously, click on the blue square in the bottom right corner of the canvas and pull diagonally inward or outward.

    • 3). Use the shape tools to draw basic shapes onto the Paint canvas. There are several shape tools available in Paint, including an ellipse, a rectangle, and a polygon. Click on the shape tool on the toolbar to activate it, then click anywhere on the canvas with the mouse, hold down the button and drag the mouse to draw the shape. Change the thickness of the shape's lines by selecting a line width below the shape tool buttons.

    • 4). Draw freehand designs with the paintbrush and pencil tools. Click on one of the tools on the toolbar, click on the canvas, hold down the mouse button and drag the mouse to create any shape or design. Change the brush shape by selecting one of the options beneath the shape tool buttons.

    • 5). Fill in any shapes or the background behind your design with the "Fill With Color" tool. Select the paint bucket from the toolbar, click once inside a shape to fill it in with color or once on the background of the image to fill the background with color.

    • 6). Add text to the artwork with the text tool. Click on the "A" button that appears on the toolbar and then click anywhere on the canvas to create a text box. Type directly into the box. Right-click inside the box at any time and choose "Text Toolbar" from the menu that comes up to see additional font options.

    • 7). Save the image via the "File" menu. Choose "Save" or "Save As," browse for a folder, type in a name for the file, select a file type from the drop-down list provided, then click the "Save" button.
