Emily Mortimer is the voice of the sleek and shiny purple car Holley Shiftwell in Disney/Pixar's Cars 2. Holley, usually on the technical side of things, finds herself thrown into being an agent when agent Finn McMissile (voice of Michael Caine) is compromised. She is apprehensive at first, but her inner strength comes through as she gets the job done.
A strong female character, Holley's role was not as grand when the movie began production but expanded as the movie progressed.
In a series of roundtable interviews, we got some great insight into Holley and what it was like to give voice to the character from producer Denise Ream and Emily Mortimer:
Denise Ream: "I like Holley Shiftwell. I think that Emily Mortimer really did bring a lot of intelligence and sophistication and warmth to that part. She originally was supposed to be a pretty small part of the movie, and I think that she really did bring a lot to the role and so she kept expanding. I’m really very pleased that there’s a female character that I think is smart."
Denise later related laughing, "I’m more like Mater than Holley. I want to be Holley but I’m kind of more like Mater.”
Emily Mortimer on her favorite thing about being Holley: "My best moment of all was the day that we watched the movie and I had my little boy with me...He hadn't seen it before, and he's 7, so he's the perfect age for this and he's known Pixar all his life. And, the moment where I get wings and I fly, he turned to me and he went, 'Mom, you're amazing!'...it was just so great.
And he's not usually that impressed by me, so it was really cool."
