Should You Purchase Travel Health Insurance?

You may have been offered travel health insurance during your last flight.
If so, you may have wondered if it was really necessary.
After all, you probably reasoned that the chances of getting in an accident or coming down with a severe illness was pretty low.
However, why would you take such a risk especially if you end up in a foreign country with an unfamiliar healthcare system? The whole point of insurance is to protect yourself in case something unfortunate happens to you.
After all, this kind of thing is not exactly a one in a million event.
We're not talking about winning the lottery or getting struck by lightning.
Finding yourself in need of travel health insurance is much more likely than you think.
When you consider the cost of such insurance, you realize what a great bargain is.
It often costs about the same as the price of a meal on an airplane! But what about your regular health insurance coverage? Well, assuming that you are already adequately covered, you still might need the extra protection while traveling.
This is because your medical coverage may go down severely while you are in a foreign country.
Often times, a health insurance provider will only cover about 50% of what they would normally cover while in the US.
When you consider the low cost of such an extra protection plan, it really does seem a no-brainer.
The last thing you want is to be stuck during your travels with an accident or illness.
This could cause a great deal of frustration and worry for you and your family, not to mention a big expense.
So my verdict is to choose to opt in for the optional health coverage offered to you at the airport.
It simply makes sense.
