- 1). Demarcate a planting area in the sun that is no more than 3 feet wide. The narrow width lets you cultivate the bed without having to step in it. Select a location with a slight slant to facilitate drainage. If necessary, create an artificial slope when you loosen the soil surface with a shovel.
- 2). Till the soil to a depth of 18 inches. Cart away rocks, roots, weeds and other debris you come across.
- 3). Incorporate 3 to 4 inches of well-rotted manure into the tilled ground uniformly. Rake the bed to smooth it out for planting.
