- Use empty tin cans for vegetables, tomato sauce or even tuna. The standard 14.5-ounce vegetable can produces a standard-sized biscuit. For larger biscuits, use 28-ounce cans or tuna cans. Tomato paste cans work for smaller biscuits.
- After contents of the can have been used, remove the label.
Remove the bottom of the can to create an empty cylinder. A safety can opener that pries the lid off, rather than cutting it, will provide a cleaner edge.
Check cans for rough areas or jagged edges. Use sandpaper or a metal file to remove them. Discard cans that do not have smooth edges.
Clean cans thoroughly. Wash by hand with mild detergent or add them to the next round in the dishwasher. Once they have cleaned and dried thoroughly, they are ready for use. - Lightly flour the edges of the homemade cutter before using it on your dough. Pressing straight down firmly will give the best results. Give a slight twist if needed to separate the dough.
Stack the cutters inside each other for easy storage. Watch for any rust that begins to appear and throw out homemade cutters if they deteriorate.
These homemade biscuit cutters work on the same principle as ones purchased in stores, but when you need a replacement, it is as close as your next meal using canned food.
