- Gatorade originated at the University of Florida. The beverage is named after the school's mascot, the Gators.
- Gatorade was developed in a laboratory by a team of physicians in 1965. An assistant coach for the University of Florida Gators wanted a way to prevent heat-related illnesses during practice and games. He consulted with university physicians, who determined that players needed to replenish electrolytes and carbohydrates lost during intensive exercise.
- The core ingredient in Gatorade is water with glucose added, and the electrolytes are supplied by monopotassium phosphate and salt. None of the products contain caffeine.
- When Gatorade was released, it had only one flavor, lemon-lime. As of 2010, however, more than 25 flavors have been discontinued since Gatorade was initially sold. The most popular flavors are original, fruit punch and orange.
- Although today it's a symbol of victory, Gatorade dunking started in 1984 in anger. Jim Burt, a player for the New York Giants NFL team, was mad at the coach and threw a full cooler of Gatorade over him. It then transformed into a tradition for the Giants, who started to regularly dump the drink in celebration. Eventually other teams followed suit.
