- According to Colorado State University Extension, the most devastating and serious disease in the sycamore tree is anthracnose. Larger leaves suffer the most damage, which wilt rapidly. Attacking the sycamore in the spring, anthracnose is often confused with damage from winter injury.
- The symptoms associated with anthracnose in the sycamore tree include large cankers on twigs and branches, black fruiting bodies on infected branches and brown-colored growth on larger, mature leaves. Rapid wilting often follows these symptoms, and sycamore trees often take on an appearance known as the witches' broom, resulting from clusters of dead twigs.
- Pruning, removing and destroying infected twigs, branches and leaves prevents the spread of fungal diseases such as anthracnose. Apply fungicides when symptoms first appear at seven to 14 day intervals if the weather is rainy. Repeat applications mid-summer if symptoms persist.
