- 1). Lay your fabric on your work surface and cut out a rectangle that measures 37-by-22 inches. Cut out another two rectangles from the same fabric that each measure 21-by-22 inches.
- 2). Lay the two smaller rectangles on your work surface. Find one 21-inch-long side on each of the rectangles and fold over 1/4 inch of fabric along the side. Iron the fold and then fold over another 1/4 inch. Sew a running stitch along the fold. These folds make the opening in the back of the sham.
- 3). Cut a 5-inch-wide piece of ribbon for the sham's trim. Make the ribbon 230 inches long. If you do not have this much ribbon as one piece, you can join multiple pieces together.
- 4). Fold over 1/4 inch along one long edge of the ribbon and iron. Fold over another 1/4 inch and sew a running stitch. This makes a smooth outer edge for the trim.
- 5). Sew a wide running stitch -- at least 1/2-inch-wide stitches -- along the remaining long edge of the ribbon. Leave the thread attached to the ribbon when you are finished sewing. Tug on the thread to gather the ribbon to about 120 inches. Make sure the ruffles created by gathering the ribbon are evenly spaced.
- 6). Lay the 37-by-22-inch rectangle right side up on your work surface. Lay the gathered ribbon on top of the rectangle with the right sides together. Sew a running stitch all the way around to attach the ribbon trim to the sham.
- 7). Lay the two smaller rectangles on top of the ribbon and sham with the good sides facing down. Pin the edges of the rectangles to the sham and sew a running stitch all the way around. Flip the two rectangular pieces underneath the sham.
