- 1). Measure the arms of your couch to see how much fabric you'll need. Choose which fabric you will use for your couch arm covers. Fabric stores carry lots of remnant fabrics that will work nicely. A washable fabric is best because when the covers get soiled, you just throw them in the wash or use a little fabric cleaner and slip them back on again. Fabrics such as microfibers or cottons are good options. Buy iron-on tape, also known as "stitch witchery," from the fabric store.
- 2). Lay out the fabric flat on a large table or other flat surface. Take the original measurements from the couch arms and transfer those measurements to your fabric. Before cutting, be sure to leave at least 1 1/2 inches so that the fabric can be folded over on the edges. This will allow for a clean edge with no visible seams.
- 3). Fold over the edges of the fabric twice while pressing them with a warm iron. Once all of the edges of the fabric pieces have been pressed, set them aside. Next, take the iron-on tape, and measure and cut pieces to fit all four sides of each of your fabric pieces. After all of the tape pieces have been measured and cut, iron on each corresponding piece of tape underneath the folded down edges of your fabric.
