- 1). Clamp the ammeter to one of the prongs on the plug of the appliance.
- 2). Turn on the appliance.
- 3). Read the measurement on the ammeter of current flowing through the appliance.
- 4). Multiply the amperes by the voltage. Most appliances are 120 volts. Appliances such as clothes dryers are 240 volts. The resulting product is the wattage of the appliance.
