- Heartburn is a common symptom of hiatal hernia. Difficulty swallowing and belching as well as chest pain are associated with hiatal hernia.
- Diagnosis is usually detrained with a barium x-ray. In some cases an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (an internal examination of the esophagus) may be preformed.
- In most cases, medication to relieve symptoms, such as an antacid, are prescribed. Eating smaller meals and refraining from lying down immediately after a meal can reduce the symptoms of acid reflux. In severe cases, surgical repair may be required.
- Call your medical physician if you have symptoms related to hiatal hernia.
- Individuals that smoke or are over weight can greatly reduce their risk by losing weight and quitting smoking.
