Padma Awards Conferred on 127

On Saturday the President of India conferred 127 Padma awards. Some of those who were chosen from the cinema industry include the following.

Actor Kamal Haasan has been conferred the Padma Bhushan for his contribution to Indian cinema. The actor had won the Padma Shri in 1990 has been in the film industry for over five decades and acted in nearly 200 films.

Kamal Haasan, who has been bestowed with Padma Bhushan, has a career spanning more than five decades, with over 190 films to his credit, across genres and languages like Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. His most famous work is in Tamil cinema in films like MOONDRAM PIRAI and NAYAGAN. Some of his memorable hits in Bollywood like HEY RAM, SADMA, CHACHI 420 and EK DUJE KE LIYE.

National Award winning actress Vidya Balan, who started her career with Ekta Kapoor's television serial 'Hum Paanch', has been chosen for the prestigious Padma Shri. Some of the films to her credit are THE DIRTY PICTURE, KAHAANI, PAA, ISHQIYA among others.

Actor Paresh Rawal too has been conferred with a Padma Shri for his contribution to Indian cinema. He has to his credit about 245 films which include GOLMAAL, OMG - OH MY GOD, MAHARATHI and SARDAR.

India's second highest civilian honour 'Padma Vibhushan' has been awarded to scientist RA Mashelkar and yoga guru BKS Iyengar for the year 2014. Kamal Haasan, Ruskin Bond, P Gopichand and Leander Paes are few of the Padma Bhushan awardees this year. In total, The Indian President has conferred on the Padma Awards to 127 this year (2014).

‘Padma Bhushan' is given for distinguished service of high order

‘Padma Shri' is distributed for distinguished service in any field.

The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.

Though these are actually conferred by the President at Rashtrapati Bhawan sometime around March/ April.

All of these awards were established in 1954.
