A lot of times dogs can bark excessively because they are stressed or frustrated.
As strange as this may sound, dogs can get stressed and feel anxiety just as much as we can.
One thing that you can do to stop this is to get your dog exercising more often taking him or her for works and playing games like fetch where the dog can play physically and move around.

You can't simply get a dog, lock it in your house all day, and come home and expect him to be happy and responsive.
There are other things you can do to reinforce good behavior as well, such as certain devices that you can purchase that emit a high-pitched sound that only your dog will be able to hear.
You use the device each time the dog begins barking and it will irritate him or her only slightly, not causing any harm.
When dealing with behavior, reinforcement is the key.
