- Sunday School teachers need to explain to their students what is occurring in the church each week and what the children can expect to hear about when they attend mass. Teachers need to use language and explanations understandable for the age they are teaching. For older children, teachers can go into more details, but for younger children be brief to keep their attention and not overwhelm them.
- In addition to being informative, Sunday School needs to be fun so children will enjoy going and will remember the lessons. Including a game or craft each week will serve both purposes. Activities need to be age-appropriate and should reiterate the message. Teachers can come up with games or crafts on their own or can find a variety of ideas on the Internet.
- Encourage children to discuss the ideas being taught as well as ask any questions they may have. Teachers should encourage all children to participate in the discussion and talk about what the lesson means to them. In addition, teachers must answer any questions the children have. This is really the only opportunity to ask questions about their faith and receive answers their parents may not know.
- Sunday School should also get children into the habit of praying and talking with God on a regular basis. Begin and/or end each class with a group prayer appropriate for the age of the students. Always make time for silent prayer at some time during the lesson, perhaps at the end. Encourage the children to pray for whatever is important to them at the time.
