- 1). Prepare a store-bought cake mix according to the directions on the box. Pour the mix into two 8-inch-square baking pans and bake, according to the instructions on the box. Remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool completely at room temperature. This will generally take at least three to four hours.
- 2). Remove the cakes from their pans and cut off the rounded top from one of the cakes. Place the uncut cake on a square plastic cake tray and spread a thick layer of butter cream icing on the top.
- 3). Place the second cake on top of the first and make sure the sides and corners are aligned as perfectly as possible. Hold a sewing tape measure at the base of one of the sides of the cake and measure the length to the top center of the cake. Add 2 inches to this measurement and record it for later.
- 4). Spread a thick layer of butter cream icing on the entire cake and smooth the sides and top with a metal or silicone spatula. If you would like colored icing on the cake, squeeze a few drops of food coloring into the icing and mix before spreading it on the cake.
- 5). Roll out a sheet of fondant in a different color from the icing on the cake. Continue rolling it out in a long strip until it reaches a thickness of about one-eighth of an inch. Cut out four 2-inch-wide strips of fondant that are equal in length to the measurement recorded in step three. Cut out a triangle from one end of each of the strips to make fish tails.
- 6). Apply a teaspoonful of icing in the top center of the cake and press the straight edge of one of the fondant strips into the icing. Shape the strip so that it runs from the center of the cake and down one side. There will be 1 1/2 to 2 inches of fondant strip remaining at the bottom of the cake. Flip this piece upward to form the curling end of a ribbon. Repeat this step with the other three strips of fondant, placing one strip on each side of the cake.
- 7). Insert the stem of a large silk flower into the center of the cake, and then insert the stems of medium-size silk flowers around the large flower. This will require six to eight medium-size flowers. Insert the stems of small silk flowers in a circle around the medium-size flowers. This will require between 20 and 25 small flowers.
