The Ins and Outs of Tooth Reshaping and Dental Contouring

A sparkling white smile with no issues is what everyone wants.
Unfortunately, some people have some minor defects in their smile that make for an unappealing smile.
These minor defects could be tiny chips, irregularly shaped teeth, a slight overlap of teeth or even extremely pointy cuspids.
Fortunately, though, there are a number of dental services that one could see the dentist about in order to fix their smile.
One of the available options is known as dental contouring, which is essentially the reshaping of one's tooth creating a more visually appealing smile in the end with little work.
Pros and Cons of Contouring The end result of dental contouring can be amazing regardless of the little changes that were made in the procedure.
And regardless of its effectiveness, one should still be aware of the pros and cons of the contouring procedure.
Here are the advantages: · Cost - If you don't need major reconstructive surgery in your mouth and simply need subtle changes, then dental contouring is ideal.
· Painless - The great thing about dental contouring is that there is no pain involved, which means no anesthesia.
There is no discomfort since the only part of the tooth that is being removed in this procedure is the surface enamel.
· Improved health - By removing imperfections (overlaps, chips, etc.
), plaque and tartar will have a more difficult time accumulating where it once did.
This reduces the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
Here are the disadvantages: · Minor change - This procedure only fixes minor imperfections in one's smile.
If you are looking for a change that will be noticeable, then you may want to go with a different option, such as veneers.
However, dental contouring can improve your smile; it just won't be as noticeable as it would be if it were a different procedure.
· Slight risk of tooth damage - When too much enamel is removed from the surface of the tooth, teeth can become sensitive and be susceptible to breaking.
However, as long as you have a qualified dentist performing the work, this likely won't be a problem.
Is Contouring the Right Choice? As long as you just need a small repair to improve the appearance of your teeth, then dental contouring is appropriate.
However, if your teeth are decaying or have problems with your gums, then tooth reshaping is not ideal although there are other options available.
If you want to obtain more information about contouring or see if you are a candidate, check with your dentist today.
