How to Grow Onions in Grow Bags

    • 1). Purchase or make a grow bag for the onions. You can buy grow bags from garden centers or online. If you want to save money, there are two types of simple grow bags to make. You can make one using 6 mil black plastic from the hardware store, or you can use a heavy-duty trash bag. If you make your own, make sure that you put a lot of holes into the bottom of the plastic for drainage. Your onions will rot without proper drainage.

    • 2). Pour the bag of potting soil and compost into the wheelbarrow. Use the hoe to mix the soil and compost together.

    • 3). Fill the grow bag with at least 12 inches of soil. Make sure you fill the bag all the way to the edges. If you are using a trash bag, roll the top of the bag down until the top of the bag is about 2 inches over the top of the soil. This will keep the plastic from covering the onions and keeping them from growing correctly.

    • 4). Plant the onion sets or seeds. If you are planting onion sets, plant them at least 1/2 to 1 inch below the surface of the soil. If you are planting seeds, mix the seeds with about 1/2 cup of sand, and sprinkle the seed mixture across the top of the soil.

    • 5). Water the onion sets or seeds, and wait for them to start growing.

    • 6). Let the onions grow. Allow the onions to grow until they reach the desired size. You can start picking the onions when they reach about 6 inches above the ground. They taste delicious in salads at this stage. If you want to, you can wait until the onions grow to a large size before pulling the onion. Once they get about 2 to 3 inches across, they are perfect for sandwiches or cooking.
