Golf has been around for a long time and it is one game that hasn't changed very much.
One thing that has changed, however, are driver clubs.
Originally they were called woods simply because they were made of wood.
At the time they were made, there was no metal light enough to serve as a driver head and if there was a metal it was just too expensive for the average person to afford.
There are three types of drivers or woods, whichever you prefer to call them and they are the following: Driver: The purpose of a driver is to hit the ball straight and hit it a great distance.
This type of club is typically used for the first swing of a course and the general idea is to keep it out of water and sand traps and on the course.
The only problem is that it does take a bit of skill to use a driver as you will need to be able to eliminate the 'slice' that plagues many golfers.
The slice is something that occurs when a golfer hits the ball at an odd angle, causing it to fly off of the fairway.
3 Wood: Sometimes a golfer needs to drive the ball, but doesn't need to drive it very far.
This is where the 3 wood comes in.
It will help you get the ball where you need it to go without driving it clean off the course and into the Mercedes parked in the next lot over.
5 Wood: Again, this will not cover the full length that a driver would, but it does cover much more distance than three woods will.
This club may be used more toward the middle of a game rather than at the beginning or the end.
There are many types of drivers, but they are now made of titanium rather than wood.
Though the price of titanium has been reduced significantly, you can still expect to pay about one hundred or more dollars for a decent driver.
These can be purchased at most sporting goods stores and pro shops, but it is recommended that you purchase them from a sporting goods store with a decent warranty.
The driver is the core of your game and you don't want to go into action without it.
After all, could you really picture yourself trying to drive with a sand wedge? So there you have it.
A driver is a very important piece of golfing equipment and once you pick one that is the right weight, has the right handle and is the right height for you, you'll be set to golf for many years.
So get out there and drive some balls!
