How to Simulate Water for Crafts

    • 1). Read the label on the epoxy resin thoroughly. There are many types and brands of resin and each has its own set of specific instructions. Ensure the instructions are understood before proceeding to avoid any undesirable results. Epoxy resin comes in two parts: resin and hardener. Mix these components together in exact proportions according to the instructions as the epoxy resin will not dry to a desirable finish if done incorrectly. Once properly mixed, the epoxy resin will solidify for a finished water simulation.

    • 2). Set up the model on a clean, flat surface. Evaluate where the water needs to be simulated. For example, if there must be water under a bridge or against a shore, make a note of this. Ensure all places are chosen for the placement of the epoxy resin to make the process smoother.

    • 3). Pour the epoxy resin in 1/8-inch layers in the desired places on the model. The resin can only be poured in these thin layers to ensure it solidifies correctly and looks natural. Wait approximately 30 minutes. The resin will begin to gel and harden. Test the resin and if it has hardened, it is safe to continue with the next layer.

    • 4). Pour as many layers as necessary to achieve the desired effect of the water simulation. Follow the scale of the model for an approximate measure as to the depth of the water if possible. For example, if the scale of the model is one inch equals one foot and the water should be six feet deep, the layers of resin should be six inches deep on the model.

    • 5). Wait for the layers of epoxy resin to dry. Test the topmost layer to ensure it is completely dry and hardened. The epoxy resin will actually simulate waves if desired if poured in staggered layers rather than one directly on top of the other. Dap the paintbrush into the resin and touch up any areas that require more water. An instance where this could be necessary is on rocks at the side of a cliff, water would be splashed up onto them making them appear wet and this should show in the model.
