DIY Office Desk

    Getting Started

    • Determine a budget before any work begins. This will help you choose the appropriate materials based on your desired finished desk. Decide on where you want the workstation to be. It can be located anywhere in the house or apartment, but should be close to an electrical outlet for easy plug-in access to office machines such as a computer, fax, phone or copier. Keep in mind that there is "facsimile" software available as well as multipurpose copy machines that serve as both scanner and fax. Using these technologies will save space but require some technical knowledge in their setup.

    Building Your Own Desk

    • Search the Internet or public library for ideas on the type of desk you want to build. Some of these can include a computer desk, reception desk, L-shaped desk or U-shaped desk. Choose one that best fits your particular style and business needs.

Follow any step-by-step instructions on how to build the workstation as well as a list of necessary supplies. While there are many different materials available, wood is probably the most versatile choice. Visit your local hardware store to either buy or rent the tools needed for construction.

As your desk can take on many different designs, consider these must-haves:

A sufficient-sized desktop. Make sure the desktop is of a smooth surface and large enough to comfortably sit a computer or laptop. You also should have ample room to perform any necessary paperwork or non-computer-related office duties.

Plenty of storage space. You can either construct or buy storage bins to keep offices supplies or work related materials. Shelves also can serve this purpose, but it's important to limit the amount of clutter. Building a desk-sized cabinet may also suffice.

Easy access drawers. The desk should contain several drawers that are accessible by arm's reach. Consider one drawer large enough to support hanging folders.

A good chair. Find a chair that is ergonomic with adjustable arms and back support that promotes good posture and reduces fatigue. Most of all, make sure it's comfortable.
