Banana Chunks
Plain bananas are all you need to dip in the fondue, but the bananas are best served in chunks at least 2 inches long. This slices of bananas easily slide off the fondue fork under the weight of the thick fondue sauce. When you use a larger chunk, you can dip it in the fondue at an angle to prevent it from sliding off. Cut the fresh banana chunks immediately before serving so they don't turn brown. A splash of citrus juice on bananas can help keep them from turning brown, but you'll taste the juice as well as the banana.
Frozen Banana
Try dipping frozen bananas in chocolate fondue for a treat similar to chocolate-covered banana Popsicles. If you try to insert a fondue fork into a frozen banana, the fruit can easily split into sections, so insert dipping sticks such as bamboo skewers in the bananas before placing them in the freezer. Place the bananas on a tray lined with wax paper and pop them in the freezer for about 30 minutes, or until partially frozen.
Coated Bananas
The bananas get covered in chocolate or cheese when you dip them in the fondue pot, but you can coat them with other ingredients before dipping if you want to change the texture, or increase the flavor profile. Try spreading peanut butter on the banana chunks and rolling them in chopped peanuts or crushed cereal. Children might enjoy bananas that are coated with a thin layer of vanilla frosting and rolled in colorful sprinkles or chocolate jimmies. Coat the banana with a bit of caramel sauce and roll them in crushed pretzel for a treat that is both sweet and salty.
Layered Fondue Dippers
If you have time to prepare dipping skewers beforehand, bananas can be served with other fondue dipping foods so you get multiple tastes and textures in a single bite. Slide other fruits such as strawberries or pineapple chunks on a skewer along with the banana chunk. Keep each piece small enough that guests can eat it in a single bite, without making the fruit so small that it slides off the stick easily. Other options you might layer on a stick include marshmallows, grapes, pound cake bites or even cheese cubes.
