- 1). Find roller skates that fit properly. When you wiggle your foot, the skate should be snug and not move around your foot.
- 2). Locate a flat surface. Make sure that the surface does not have any rocks, pebbles or obstacles that might give you difficulty. It may be a good idea to have a wall on the side of you, so that you can grip it for support if you are about to fall.
- 3). Pivot your feet slightly outwards, such that your heels are closer together than your toes.
- 4). Use the foot opposite of your dominant hand to push your other skate forward, and, once you start moving in the direction of the push, lift up the foot that you used to push off.
- 5). Mimic the motion of your moving foot with your other foot, which should be raised off of the ground. This motion should be repeated by alternating feet. In this way, you will create the skating motion and be able to keep your speed consistent.
