- 1). Decide on your mask shape by drawing a version of it on a sheet of copy paper. When designing your mask shape, do not forget to draw eye holes and a groove for the bridge of your nose. Use paper scissors to cut out the mask shape and eye holes. Hold up the copy-paper mask to your face to see if you like the overall fit. (You may need to repeat this process a few times until you achieve the appropriate mask shape.) When you are pleased with your paper mask, trace the shape (and eye holes) onto a piece of heavy cardboard. Cut out the cardboard mask.
- 2). Trace the cardboard mask onto a piece of brightly colored felt or other heavyweight fabric of your choice. Use fabric scissors to cut out the mask and eye holes. Make sure that the fabric mask is the exact same shape as your cardboard mask.
- 3). Glue the stick bottoms of feathers to the top front edges (and bottom edges, if desired) of your cardboard mask so that the feather flumes are sticking up and branching out over the mask. Mix and match feather colors that coordinate with the colors of your costume or outfit. Then take a 12-inch dowel rod and glue the top 2 inches to the front, bottom-right corner of your cardboard mask. This dowel rod will serve as your mask holder.
- 4). Glue your fabric mask on top of your decorated cardboard mask so that all feathers and the top of the dowel rod are fully covered and secured. Smooth down the fabric to achieve a professional look. Glue trim and/or ribbon around the fabric edges of the entire mask and eye holes to hide all seams and add extra stability to the mask.
- 5). Embellish and decorate the fabric-covered mask with faux jewels, rhinestones, glitter, beads, trim and other trinkets that suit your style. Allow 24 hours for your one-of-a-kind mask to fully dry before taking it to the masquerade party.
