How to Attract Wild Birds to a New Feeder

    • 1). Put up a wide variety of bird feeders to bring birds to your backyard. Put up suet bird feeders to attract insectivores such as woodpeckers and blue jays; platform feeders for cardinals and other ground feeders; hummingbird feeders for hummingbirds; and hanging feeders for birds that perch. A variety of food sources attracts wild birds to your backyard more quickly than a single feeder.

    • 2). Install nesting boxes and a source of water such as a birdbath near the new feeder. Plant native shrubs, trees and other plants to create a habitat for local birds. Emphasize plants that attract the type of bird targeted by your new feeder. For example, if you wish to draw in hummingbirds, plant trumpet honeysuckle, red columbine and other plants that hummingbirds like.

    • 3). Keep the bird feeder or feeders constantly full of fresh food and the birdbath filled with water. Birds are more apt to visit your yard if they know there's a reliable source of food and water.
