Checklist for Weeding

While weeds in your garden can be an eyesore, they also can be a threat to the general health of your plants. Weeds steal valuable nutrients and water from the plants around them and make life difficult for your prized flowers or freshly-mowed lawn. You may not get rid of weeds completely, but you can keep them under control with frequent outdoor maintenance. With the right tools, your garden or lawn can have fewer weeds in no time.

    Weed Killer

    • Any herbicide that is designed with the specific purpose of killing weeds is an asset. Make sure to spot test in a small part of your lawn to ensure it doesn't harm your grass or other plants.

    Wheelbarrow

    • A wheelbarrow serves more than one purpose. It helps you move all of your gardening gear around and it's a place to dump the weeds that you pull until you can put them in a mulch pile or trash can.

    Gardening Gloves

    • Pulling weeds out of the ground is one of the most common methods for instantly removing them from your yard. Gardening gloves will help protect your hands. Make sure that you pull the entire root out of the ground so that weed doesn't grow back.

    Water Hose

    • Pull weeds when the ground is wet, advises the Garden Forever website. Use your water hose to give the yard a good soak before you start weeding so that they come out faster.

    Rake

    • A rake gets leaves off of your lawn, but it also will uproot small, shallow-rooted weeds. If you rake areas under attack by weeds of this nature, you'll see a decline in population.

    Hoe

    • Hoes help to destroy weeds before they grow into a nuisance, according to Plantea.com. Giving your garden or lawn a regular hoeing in trouble areas can help prevent more destructive weed problems before they start. Be sure to pull the weeds from the area that you hoe so that their seeds don't germinate.
