- 1). Figure out how much you want to spend on your new rug. Rugs can range in price from under $100 to thousands of dollars. Base this decision on what you can afford, as well as what the rug will be used for. A runner in a child's playroom, for example, probably shouldn't cost thousands.
- 2). Find out more about the type of material you're considering for your rug. Synthetic fibers, for example, are generally easier to clean and maintain and are more durable than natural fibers. On the other hand, natural fibers can also be durable and softer, as well. Synthetic fibers include acrylic, nylon and olefin rugs, while natural fibers include cotton, sisal, jute and wool.
- 3). Figure out what size rug you want to use. Rugs under a coffee table, for example, are generally 4-by-6 feet to 6-by-9 feet. A dining room table usually needs a rug at least 8 feet wide, but you should make sure the legs of chairs are still on the carpet when slid out. Rugs that are 8-by-11 feet will typically work for whole rooms. Furniture does not have to be on the rug completely.
- 4). Check out many different patterns and colors with rugs. Most rugs will have at least a few colors and include a pattern. Make sure the one you choose matches the room you're putting it in. Find out the store's refund policy, just in case you get the rug home and that royal blue you saw in the store has turned bright turquoise in your living room light.
