How to Change Computer File Folders

    Windows

    • 1). Open the Windows menu at the bottom left of the screen and choose "(My) Computer." This is the control room for all files located on your computer.

    • 2). Navigate through the files until you find the folder you want to change. Click on the folder once you find it. Move any folder by clicking it and dragging it to a new location. Create a new folder by clicking on "File," then "New" and "Folder."

    • 3). Change the name of the folder by right-clicking and scrolling to "Rename." A text box appears where you type in the new name. Press "Enter" or hit "OK" to complete.

    • 4). Delete the folder by clicking on the "File" menu at the top of the screen. Click "Delete" to move the item to the Recycle Bin.

    • 5). Move or copy the folder by clicking on "Edit" and then "Copy" or "Move." Copy leaves the original file in place so you can put another copy somewhere else. Move erases the original file so it will only exist in the new location. Find the section of the hard drive such as the desktop or another folder that you want to place the file in. Click on "File" and "Paste" once you find it.

    Mac

    • 1). Open your finder, which is the file manager in the Mac operating system. Browse through files to find the folder you want to change. Create a new folder by clicking on "File" and "New Folder." There is also a button that looks like a mechanical wheel on the far right of the finder that you can click on and then click "New Folder."

    • 2). Double-click on any folder to pull up a folder menu. Scroll to "Get Info" to find out information about the folder. Change the name of the folder in "Get Info" by highlighting the current name and typing in a new one.

    • 3). Click and drag the file folder to any other section of the hard drive such as desktop, documents, etc. to move it. Send it to the trash by clicking and dragging it to the trash can. Another option is to click "File" and then "Send to Trash."

    • 4). Duplicate a file (make another copy in the same location) by double-clicking and scrolling to "Duplicate." Copy a file by double-clicking and scrolling to "Make Copy." Navigate to the new location and click "File" and "Paste" to move the folder.
